On Friday, March 31, at about 5:15 p.m., Atlantic City police officers Adrian Nunez-Santos and Riley Flynn were patrolling the 500 block of north South Carolina Avenue when they observed Michael Aybar-Fernandez standing in front of an apartment building. Police attempted to stop him as part of a criminal investigation. Aybar-Fernandez immediately retreated into the apartment building, police said.
Officers Julian Monsalve and Atiqul Islam saw Aybar-Fernandez walking in the rear of the apartment building and attempted to stop him. Aybar-Fernandez began to run, and a brief foot chase ensued, police said.
Officers said they saw Aybar-Fernandez throw a handgun onto the rooftop of a maintenance building. Aybar-Fernandez was arrested a short distance away, they said.
Officers subsequently found a loaded handgun that was fitted with a high-capacity magazine and hollow point bullets on the roof of the maintenance building, they said.
Aybar-Fernandez was charged with weapons offenses. He was being held in the Atlantic County Justice Facility.
